How to start a website without knowing much of coding?

Though coding is easy, everybody hasn’t got time to spend it on learning web designing and development. They want to bring there contributions online but, how do they do it? Well, you can create your own website without having much knowledge of coding. How is that? that is pretty simple, there are many ready made scripts which will help you build your own websites in no time. It will need only some knowledge of basic handling. It wouldn’t be a hard task to setup the script, because, they provide you with every possible information to know to install and manage it.

What do we basically call this kind of scripts? these scripts are called CMS (Content management system). These are really helpful, they will handle everything by themselves, all you have to do is write what you want to publish and hit publish button, in no time your just published article will be online, visible to whole world. CMS(Content management system) are very flexible systems, they let you create any type of website you want. Few popular CMS come with a lot of ready made plugins to help you configure the CMS(Content management system) to its core. There are big communities to help you understand thoroughly and to guide you about this CMS(Content management system) thing. If you are thinking about how much it may cost, then you must know all the popular CMS are free of cost. It means that you wont need to pay for anything except for your web host and domain.

You want to start a blog? or a website ? What is key difference between them? well, you may know, a blog has a author who keeps posting things he likes as I do. Wisne can be said as blog. A blog is a a place where there are collection of articles written by one or many authors. But, where as websites, website a same content forever until it’s changed. Website doesn’t need to have many authors. Website will represent content which is almost permanent. So, if you are starting a blog, then you mean you will keep updating it periodically, if you are starting a website. Then, content may never change. CMS are helpful for both, maybe its website, or maybe it blog you can create anything out of CMS.

Let’s see very basic examples of CMS, probably you must have heard of blogspot, or wordpress. Blog spot is service by Google and WordPress is by WordPress itself,  they are most popular multi-blog websites. They let anyone start their own blog or website( if you want to call it like this). Same does the by Microsoft but it isn’t as popular as those two are. If you want to get started now, then go for them. All you have to do is register your self on their site to become a member and in fraction of minutes you will have your own or, you just put anything you want(unless they aren’t violating any rules) on your blog and ask your friends and family to visit it. And these services are totally free, they don’t cost a buck.

You want to move on to next level? you want to run your own blog or website without being dependent on such services? then maybe you will also need to shell out some bucks on hosting services, domains and other services. If you want to use free host, then you got to be careful, as all free hosts don’t provide you all features needed to install CMS. Basically, all cms are written in PHP language, you will need a host which support PHP, and MYSQL to store all its data.

Some of the Popular CMS are WordPress, Joomla, Drupal. These are most used CMS in present days. WordPress CMS(which I use too) was a blog CMS but soon it was implemented everywhere, it can be customized very easily so everybody bent it to according to their needs. Joomla is also another popular CMS it is greatly used by commercial sites like shopping sites, etc. It has very large community support too. Drupal CMS is popular for its customization, if you search online you can find many tutorials about Drupal customization. If you are a hell of coder and want to play with CMS then drupal is recommended for you. Of all this, WordPress is known for SEO ready, I mean wordpress and google are like friends. Your wordpress site gets listed in google Very easily, so wordpress is most SEO friendly CMS.

There are many other popular CMS other than these available online, you can just google them and reach them.

URLs also mean much for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) , I am sure people don’t like to compromise with Search Engine Optimization(SEO) ranks. Well, there is solution for every problem. You can create desired URLs that redirect to any page you want.

How to do?

You will edit .htaccess file such that it redirects every URL to a PHP page, this PHP page will read the entered URL and take you to the right page.

Like this to

Lets start coding

we will edit .htaccess file here,

Write that in a file and save it as “.htaccess” (period “.” as prefix) in the main directory.

what does that code do? That is an apache server configuration code, whenever the URL is entered and queried, the above code checks if the file or destination exists only if the file doesn’t then the server will take it to the handle.php

NOW, create a MySQL table like one below.

Name the table anything you want, here I am naming the table as link_s.

Now create a PHP page named handle.php and save it in main directory, Continue reading Custom URLs to make your website more url friendly

[How to] Hide “.php” file extension and beautify your URLs using .htaccess mod rewrite rule

Everybody likes SEO friendly and user friendly URLs, to customize the URLs you have to configure your Apache server and

Please remember, mod_rewrite should be enabled in Apache configuration in order to make this work. URL remapping should be done carefully, if any wrong changes are done then, whole website may stop working.

First, Lets see how can we redirect simple URLs like

From to

lets break it down,

This code “RewriteEngine On” above enables the rewrite_mod , so we can write redirect the pages.

The above line says the server that, when someone tries to reach “something.html” on local server, then take them to the new place “http://www.example/path/something.html

this symbol is used to tell to start matching the url
this symbol is used to tell to stop matching

So anything you write between and $ will be considered as pattern to be matched.

Now, Lets make Dynamic URL SEO Friendly

 you can make look like

by saving this in htaccess file

here as you can see I have used (.*) , this will preserve whatever is present in it and then it can be used again in future.

( ) is used to preserve anything for future use and  (dot) is used to match any single character. is used to match the previous character for one or more times.

So anything typed where (.*) is present can be accessed by using $1 $2 so on.

Things needed to setup Dedicated server at home

Here, today, we will see what are basic things needed to setup a dedicated server.

First, what are dedicated servers for? Dedicated server can be used to host your website or setup a game server or use it as an application server or just a file server. Big websites like MSN , Yahoo, Facebook and all don’t ask anybody for web space to host their sites, what they do is they install their own servers and use them to host their site.

But, why dedicated server? Dedicated servers are far better than normal hosting, having dedicated server is like having total tower of your own, in shared hosting where you get limited space, limited access to features, limited tools, limited everything. But, when it comes to your own dedicated server, you can do anything you want, install any Control panel, run any scripts, run any application, have many features as you want, totally customize your server and everything is under your control so you will be owner of your own. You can upgrade features anytime you want like storage capacity, RAM and all. You can monitor it by yourself, you can give your friends some space if you want, you are just like a master re-seller. Somethings You Must Worry About, When It Comes to Web Site Performance

It is not easy to design a best website. There are many websites online which load in a blink of eyes and also there are sites which take whole day to load, you have to be wise while designing them to make them good site.

We can improve your site performance by changing simple things, some might be hard but not as hard as you think. First thing to remember, the page with too many images isn’t a good page, it eats a lot of bandwidth and takes too much time to load obviously. So, try to avoid images as much as possible, like use CSS, use it for replacing images.

If you are a die hard fan of Photoshop web designs then consider converting PSDs into Xhtml/CSS, because direct outcame websites from Photoshop have too many images and loading such sites on slow connection is true time eating task. When you convert a PSD to Html/Css design there are a lot improvements in speeds and images can be avoided as much as possible. If images are really that needed then you better optimize those images, after optimization there will be a little decrease in size and also some quality will be lost, but this is only the best way to keep unavoidable images and decrease your site loading time.

Other than images, the problems may also occur in the form of incomplete script or improper scripts. Forgetting to close the function in the web scripts or running the scripts without end will make websites load for ever, some scripts are so heavy that it totally slow down the website and make loading take about 2 to 3 minutes. So, be careful while coding the web scripts, they matter while we think about website performance.

Some people like to frame content from one site to another, but when a site which is linked in is down, the site will look ugly with a error page and before that it take much of time to load too. So, try not to frame a lot of content from different sites, that’s just welcoming troubles.

If your site has a content which runs more than 4000 words then probably you should break the page into pages, because not only loading takes time but it becomes hard to scroll through content and it is less readable. Breaking into pages not only improves performance but also increase the beauty and organization.

Download and save content from web to local storage using PHP

You may want to automate the task downloading files from the web or remote area to your local storage space, you can use the PHP for this purpose.

It can be done by using the code below.

fopen() : this function is used to open the file in specified mode.

There are several file open modes in php.

Secure your WordPress blog with simple settings and addons

You are tired of spam comments and etc? then do change some settings which will stop your site from being spammed.

Under Settings->Discussion Setting, Apply these settings.

Enable “comment author must fill out name and e-mail”, this will make user to fill out the name and email before they post the comment, this will considerably reduce the spammers.

“Users must be registered and logged in to comment”, if you enable this only registered users can comment, which means no user can comment without being your blog member. This will totally reduce spam.

After this install Captcha, this will allow user to comment on only correctly entering the captcha code. I am using AlphaOmega Captcha & Anti-Spam Filter, its good enough to stop spam. Give it a try.
